Netanyahu to Present Economic Plan Next Week; Rabbi Ravitz Expresses Chareidi Bitterness

At a Likud meeting Monday night Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he plans to present his economic plan as early as next week. In the initial phase NIS 10 billion ($2 billion) in government expenses will be slashed, followed by another NIS 10-billion cut in the second phase. Experts say Netanyahu intends to curtail Children's Allowances and to totally repeal the Large Families Law.

On Monday the Palestinian Legislative Council chose Mahmoud Abbas (also known as Abu Mazen) as the prime minister of the Palestinian Authority. The Palestinian parliament granted day- to-day responsibility for Palestinian affairs to the prime minister, but left ultimate authority over the security services, negotiations with Israel, and other matters firmly in the hands of Yasser Arafat. Still, the prime minister's precise powers were left vague enough so that the first holder of the job will be able to define and develop them in practice.

"Unless a technical problem arises I believe municipal elections in Jerusalem, Haifa and Or Akiva should be held as soon as possible. This is a democratic procedure that is greatly needed," Interior Minister Avraham Poraz (Shinui) told a Knesset plenum last week in response to a series of proposals on arranging elections, indicating he thinks they should be held June 3.

Rav Moshe Shmuel Rosenbaum who was a pioneer of the chareidi Kehilla Adass Israel in Melbourne, Australia, passed away last week at the age of ninety. His aron arrived in Yerushalayim on Wednesday and he was buried in Har Hazeisim next to his illustrious wife.
